Heinz announced that it will incorporate innovative and more sustainable caps into its extruded sauce bottles, which can be 100% recycled. The new bottle cap is planned to be promoted worldwide in 2022, with the first stop in the European market. This unique new cap is made of an innovative single type of material, Heinz has invested 8 years of research and development time, more than 185000 hours and $1.2 million, to develop suitable alternative caps for its convenient and popular extruded bottles. Heinz’s global sales of extruded sauce bottles will reach 1 billion in 2020. In order to develop new bottle caps, Heinz has created 45 different designs and printed them with the most advanced 3D printer. After the prototype is created, Heinz follows a strict test procedure to ensure that the bottle cap meets the highest quality standards. The first Heinz variety to use the new bottle cap will be the world’s most popular ketchup, Heinz ketchup and Heinz barbecue sauce. This means that the potential 1 billion plastic bottle caps, one enough to fill 35 Olympic swimming pools, can be recycled instead of entering the landfill. So far, Heinz sauce bottles use a flexible valve that provides the ideal sauce amount for each extrusion, but this cap is usually difficult to recycle. The new innovative bottle cap uses a single, rigid and more recyclable material. While providing the same extrusion function, the bottle cap and bottle body can be easily recycled together. The new cap can dispense the same amount of sauce each time without affecting the extrudability.
